International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The theme aims to highlight the importance of indigenous media in challenging stereotypes, forging indigenous peoples’ identities, communicating with the outside world, and influencing the social and political agenda. (United Nations)

Given the inspiration many Pagans have drawn from various indigenous peoples, including the rediscovery of our own ancestral traditions, this day may be an opportunity for reverence, reflection, and activism.  It may also be appropriate to engage with issues of cultural appropriation in our communities.

  2. By the way, if you know of any good essays on cultural appropriation, would you be willing to share? It’s always hard to know when you’re accepting the gifts that have been offered, when you’re overstepping, and when you’re doing something creative that has unfortunate overlap with someone’s existing cultural practices. And also, how to handle things, in that third case.

    • There is a book called “Talking About the Elephant”, edited by Lupa, which deals with cultural appropriation issues in Pagan contexts. I haven’t read it, but it looks good. You can find it on Amazon. 🙂
